Cost estimator

What should a tradesperson cost in South Africa?

Pick a service and your province for an indicative price band. Wide ranges — every job's different, but these are the brackets quotes usually fall into. Real quotes from local pros are always free on Handi.

Province affects pricing — Cape Town and Joburg run 5-10% above the national baseline; rural areas can be 10-15% below.

Painting

R80 – R140 per m²

labour, materials extra

Per square metre of wall area, labour only. Add R30-R60/m² for paint depending on brand and finish. Ceilings + cutting-in usually quoted separately.

Guide only — actual quotes vary based on job complexity, access, materials, and urgency. Always get 2-3 quotes from verified local pros before committing.

Typical painting jobs & what they cost

Concrete examples at the national baseline. Bands reflect normal variation — the same job can sit at the low or high end depending on access, materials, and urgency.

Repaint a 12 m² bedroom (walls + ceiling)
R2,000 – R3,200

Includes prep, two coats, and trim cutting-in. Paint extra (≈R500-R900 for that size).

Full house exterior (200 m² walls)
R28,000 – R55,000

Big variable: prep work. Cracked or chalky walls need more sealer and primer, pushing toward the top of the band.

Wood window frames re-paint (10 frames)
R3,500 – R7,500

Sanding, primer, and 2 coats per frame. Lead-paint stripping (older homes) is a separate job and quoted carefully.

Kitchen cupboard re-spray
R6,500 – R14,000

Doors come off, get spray-painted, and go back. Massively cheaper than new cupboards — common renovation upgrade.

Boundary wall paint (30 m at 2 m high)
R3,800 – R7,200

60 m² of wall. Plaster cracks need filling first; pros charge a separate R600-R1 500 for prep on bad walls.

A note on these numbers

Bands come from rates published in our pricing guides, mixed with what we see Handi-za providers actually quoting across the country. They're starting points — not a fixed price list. Job-specific factors (access, height, asbestos, after-hours, time pressure) all move the needle. Treat this as the first 30 seconds of research before you start collecting real quotes.
